Technical Director & Facilities Manager

Palm Beach Opera seeks a Technical Director & Facilities Manager to begin seasonal work in September.  This position works closely with the Director of Production & Facilities (DP), Stage Manager (SM), and members of IATSE 500 to ensure safe, timely, and accurate installation and set up of scenery, progress of onstage rehearsals, efficient scene and act changes, performances, and load out.  This position also works to ensure smooth operations at the Bailey Opera Center and PBO Warehouse.

Primary Responsibilities

Technical Director

  • Coordinate pre-production planning with DP, including schedule, drafting, communication with director/design teams and renting companies, production usage research, crew requirements, trucking (local and long distance), scenery set up and storage, methods of efficiency, and materials.
  • Track production budgets with DP.
  • Interview and hire seasonal production staff in coordination with DP.
  • Plan, organize, and oversee any pre-production scenic construction.
  • Coordinate production planning with DP and SM, including schedule, production meetings, construction of scenery, stage usage, scenery storage, rigging, crew requirements, materials, load-in, rehearsal, performance, and load-out needs.
  • Coordinate necessary crew with DP and third parties for rehearsals, work calls, performances, load-out, etc.
  • Maintain warehouse inventory, including documentation and tracking of rentals, new inventory, tools, and supplies.
  • Plan and coordinate moving of soft goods and other Kravis Center equipment for load-in and load-out to maximize efficiency.
  • Plan and organize load-out of warehouse and rehearsal center for production week.
  • Oversee and direct crew for all load-ins and load-outs, actively communicating with DP and SM on progress.
  • Attend all PBO work, rehearsal, and performance calls which involve scenery.
  • Oversee and direct stage crew for assigned PBO events. Participate as technical support as needed.

Facilities Manager

  • Assist DP with facilities-related tasks as assigned, including scheduling and meeting contractors, soliciting work and repair bids, performing minor repairs and upkeep of facilities systems, furniture and equipment relocating, and coordination of building use.
  • Track and document building maintenance.
  • Track building expenses with DP.
  • Set-up, support, and tear-down events in PBO facilities. Supervise internal and external events including rentals, community usage, and PBO presentations.
  • Assume responsibilities of DP for short periods when travel or other obligations require.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Extensive stage experience in a leadership role, including at least 3 years in a related position.
  • Extensive knowledge of theatrical rigging standards, scenery assembly methods, andsafe stage working practices.
  • Strong Vectorworks drafting skills, and proficiency Microsoft 365 (Excel and Word).
  • Ability to establish priorities and multitask with strong organizational skills, a solution-oriented mindset, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate goal-oriented leadership skills with the proven ability to direct stage crew, while remaining a flexible and focused team player.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including extended hours, evenings, and weekends.
  • Must be able to work for long uninterrupted periods with significant standing, walking, and decision-making.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
