As One: response to ‘Out of nowhere’

This aria describes an attack on Hannah after. A list of transgender people who have been slain is read during this aria.

Jaime: This is how it happens with a lot of trans women. Some guys hit on them, unknowingly, and there are guys who, you wouldn’t know it, but are very dangerous. And they [the guys] are not okay with it. And they [the women] think, “Oh, he likes me!” And it is so rare to feel like someone likes you so it’s tempting to just go for it…and that’s how some of these things just do so bad and why so many people get murdered…trying to find someone who will like them…and they don’t get away a lot of the time.

Victor: He [the attacker] is so passionate about it. He’s like, ‘I’m going to kill you; I’m going to kill you.”

Dyran: I like how they [the librettists] included how they died. They could have just listed their names and where they were from.

Victor: [The hatred] is not just a person-to-person thing, maybe it’s a systemic thing…

Victor: Do you ever wonder…I mean, I just wonder why people want to treat others badly just for the fun of it. I just don’t understand it. What do they get out of it? This reminds me of this one artists named Perfume Genius. He has this song called ‘All Waters’ where he questions when everyone will just respect other people…

Do you ever think that this will all go away? I mean do you think it’s a human thing to avoid peace? It is predisposition to just look out for ourselves?

Jude: Everything that happens goes back to science. I read something that said, “never in the history of the world has there ever been peace between human beings, ” because to survive we have to out-compete each other and sometimes that means fighting each other. And to survive, you have to be selfish…to be alive is selfish because you have to take things for yourself and that’s not a bad thing, that’s just existing. But there is a different kind of selfishness where you hurt other people and that’s not what it’s all about.
