Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) added a dramatic urgency to the tradition of bel canto vocal writing that foreshadowed Verdi and verismo. His admiration of such classical masters as Haydn and Mozart informed his refined orchestration and his cultivated musical development and structure. Donizetti’s Lucia first faced the footlights at the San Carlo in Naples, on September 26, 1835.
